At age 16, Barbara Gilbert founded her high school photo club with a group
of friends. Two years later, her black-and-white photographs won a nationwide
youth art contest and were exhibited at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.
During her BFA and MFA, Gilbert studied under established photographers Evergon,
Geneviève Cadieux, Angela Grauerholz, and Holly King, among others. Gilbert
obtained extensive arts administration experience at the Ontario Arts Council
(Visual Arts Office) and the Art Gallery of Ontario (Education Department).
More recently, Barbara Gilbert was Board President of Gallery 44 Centre for
Contemporary Photography, where she continues to rub shoulders with such accomplished
photographers as Toni Hafkenschied, Simon Glass, April Hickox, Jennifer Long,
Arthur Renwick, and Sara Angelucci. Gilbert has exhibited her photographic work
in Paris, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, and Hamilton.
